NEW TECHNOLOGY IN DENTISTRY
New Technology in Dentistry
When something’s wrong your teeth, you rely on the trusted expertise of your local dentist. At Carolina Dental Arts, we make it our mission to stay on top of new breakthroughs, to ensure you and your loved ones have access to the latest dental technology for optimal oral health.
More Accurate 3-D Imaging
While relatively new to the field of dentistry, cone beam computed tomography (3-D imaging), is quickly becoming the latest way for dentists to more accurately diagnose and treat oral health issues. Expanding on 2-D imaging, cone beam technology allows dental care providers to get a clear picture of the structures of the teeth, face and jaw — all in color. The cone beam is similar to X-rays, but is converted into a three-dimensional view. During the scan, the cone-shaped beam rotates around the patient’s mouth, providing a three-dimensional picture.
Benefit of 3-D Dental Imaging
With advances in technology come greater benefits for patients, including the following:
- Completely painless
- Fast (only takes about 10 seconds)
- Simple (patients just sit down in the imaging area)'
Revolutionary 3-D Tissue Printing
According to researchers at Harvard, progress is being made toward using 3-D printing technology to create human tissue. Thanks to advancements in science, tissue that would normally be required from a transplant is now being grown in a laboratory. Dr. Anthony Atala, of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine Winston-Salem, NC, says the research is promising. "It shows what can happen in the laboratory when it comes to developing human-like tissue,” Atala said.
